Magic The Gathering Tutorial

Hello again to you guys! This is a tutorial for anyone who want to learn,interested, or new to Magic The Gathering. The tutorial will be 2, one is video tutorial made from official website and the other one is text and photo.

The video split into 6 part :

First before we start you need few thing, what it is? Yeah the thing you need is Magic The Gathering cards and playmat. If you already have that then lets go to start the tutorial.

To play Magic The Gathering, you just need 5 part of the game and then you can play magic with ease.


Part 1 of 5 : Understanding The Basic

• Choose Player = You need 2 player or more for play the game,
• Make a Deck = Your deck is your army, your arsenal. Amount of cards is not limited for informal setting but usually minimum cards is 60, in tournament setting sometimes there will called limited deck which has minimum 40 cards.

• Draw a card = At Beginning of each game, each player draw 7 card from his or her deck and at beginning of each turn, a player draw one card and add to their hand.


• Graveyard = When a player discard a card, uses a card or when creature dies or a spell is destroyed, that card is put in a player graveyard.

• Player Life = Each player start with 20 point of life, players damage to both creature and each other. And damage dealt by monster or spell will cause lost of player life.

• Lose Condition =  There is 3 way for player lose a game, first is when player life total is at or below 0, second is when at beginning of turn player can no longer draw any card from his or her deck, and third is when player received 10 poison counter.

• Understand Characteristic  = Each color have different characteristic such as white is color of protetion and order, blue is color of deceit and intellect, black is color of decay and death, red is color of fury and chaos, and green is color of life and nature.




Part 2 of 5 : Understanding the Different Kinds of Card

• Understand what lands are where "mana" comes from =  Lands produce magical energy or "mana" which is fuel used to cast other spells or used to summon, There are 5 basic lands, white lands or plains which produce white mana. Blue lands or Islands which produce blue mana. Black lands or Swamps which produce black mana. Red lands or Mountains which produce red mana. And Green lands or forest which produce green mana.

Understand what "sorceries" are = Sorceries are magical incatation that you can only cast during your own turn.

Understand what "instant" are = Instant is like sorceries, except you can cast them during other player turn in addition to your own and you can cast them in respone to a spell.


Understand "enchantment" are = Enchantment come in two flavors : either they attached to a creature, affecting only one card, in which called by "Aura" or they sit around the battlefield,close to lands, unattached to any card but affecting all cards on your side. And Enchantment are permanent, meaning they stay on battlefield unless they are destroyed.

Understand "artifact" = Artifact is magical items and also permanent, and there are three basic kinds of artifact.1. Normal artifacts are similar to enchantments,2. Equipment artifacts are can be attached to creature and giving them extra abilities, and artifact not follow creature to graveyard which means artifact still on battlefield even creature go to graveyard. 3. Artifact Creature is card which creature and artifact at the same time, but dont take spesific mana to summon because they are colorless.

Understand what creature are = first when creature enter the battlefield they have summoning sickness, means they cannot be "tapped" in the same turn they summon. And creature have many special abilities such as flying, haste,lifelink, trample etc.

Understand planeswalkers fuction = Planeswalker is like supercharged creature and each planeswalker comes with certain number or loyalty counter. The Symbol like "+X" and "-X" means put or remove X number of loyalty counter on planeswalker.


Part 3 of 5 : Understanding Gameplay

Understand how to summon or cast a spell = You summon creature by looking at its casting cost which is usually a circled number followed by specific color of mana. Like in photo you can see number 1 followed by black mana symbol means you need 1 mana of any color and 1 black mana in total 2 mana.

Understand what tapping and untapping = Tapping is how you use the mana in lands or how you attack with creatures. In order to tap, you turn the card sideways. Tapping card means you cannot use certain abilities for one turn, in example you tap card in order attack, it stayed tapped until beginning of your next turn which mean that card cant block until its untapping again.

Know the strength and toughness stand for = Creature have one number for strength and another for toughness. Strength is number of point creature can deal in combat and Toughness is number of point creature can withstand in combat before dies.

Understand how to active certain abilities = Using abilities that in creature or enchantment have is sometimes need pay a cost which means in mana to use them. Like the example Dauthi Cutthroat have abilities that can destroy target creature with shadow with pay 1 any mana and 1 black mana in total 2 cost mana and tapped.

Part 4 of 5 : Understanding Phase of Turn

Begining Phase = Begining phase has three different steps, First is untap step which player untap all his card, Second is Upkeep step is step which player need to pay mana, Third is Draw step which player draw one card.

First Main Phase = During this phase, a player may put down one land from his or her hand and during this phase, player may choose to play a card from his or her hand by tapping lands to produce mana.
Combat Phase = combat phase split into five step which is declare attack,declare attackers, declare blockers, assign damage, end of combat
  1. Declare attack: this is where the player first declares attack. The defender may play spells after the attack has been declared.
  2. Declare attackers: after attack has been declared, the attacking player chooses which creatures he wishes to attack with. Attacking player cannot choose which defending creatures he wishes to attack.
  3. Declare blockers: the defending player chooses which, if any, attacking creatures s/he wishes to block. Multiple blockers can be assigned to a single attacker.
  4. Assign damage: creatures deal damage to one another during this step. Attacking creatures with equal (or higher) power compared the blocking creature's toughness destroy that blocking creature. Blocking creatures with equal (or higher) power compared the attacking creature's toughness destroy that attacking creature. It is possible for both creatures to destroy each other.
  5. End of combat: nothing much happens during this phase; both players are given the opportunity to cast instants.

Second Main Phase = After combat, there is second main phase which identical to first in which player can cast spells and summon creatures
Ending phase or cleanup = Any abilities or spells that "triggers" take place and last chance player to cast instant. During this phase player whose turn is about to end discard down to 7 card if he or she has more than 7 cards.
Part 5 of 5 Advanced Concepts

Understand what flying is = Creature with flying cannot be blocked by creatures without flying. In other word if creature is flying it can only be blocked by another creature with flying or creature that can explicitly to block creature with flying.

Understand what vigilance is = Vigilance is ability to attack without tapping. Which mean creature can attack without tapping and block in next enemy turn. (normailly after attack creature cant block next turn because tapped)

Understand what haste is = Haste is ability to tap and attack the very same turn creature gets into play or summoned. Normally creature must wait a turn because of summoning sickness.

Understand what trample is = Trample is ability creature have to deal damage to opponents even if thath creature is being blocked by opponents creature.

Understand what shadow is = shadow is ability that creature have with shadow can only be block with other creature with shadow.

Understand what infect is = Infect is damage deaks damage to creature in form of counter and to player in form of poison counter and these counter are permanent.
